Thinking about asking a special person to be your valentine? Or perhaps you have one, and you want to go beyond the very basics for the holiday? Here are some fantastic ideas for gifts for Valentine’s Day!

CHHS senior Robert Nash made a postcard for his girlfriend for their first Valentine’s Day together.

#1: Lego Flowers / Lego set in general to build together

This gift idea has begun trending on social media for couples in general. It is truly adorable. Building lego flowers can show that not only will you put time, love and care into a relationship for this person, but they also don’t die, unlike regular flowers! You can also use a Lego set as an excuse for a date/hangout. Great decor for a room and a heartfelt way to build memories together.

#2: Homemade baked goods!

Who doesn’t like the taste of homemade cookies? If you have an affinity for baking, or perhaps want to show love in the form of food, you should definitely consider baking a treat for your special someone! Homemade baked goods can show that you’re willing to put in effort to make a person happy, especially if you make them something they love. There are plenty of both simple and complex recipes online for all sorts of different foods. Go search for a recipe with ingredients you already have, and make them something both special and delicious!

#3: Handwritten love letters

Love letters have always been a special gift to receive, even though they are not as popular in modern times with the existence of technology and social media as they were in the past. They can show that you are thoughtful and have lots of kind, loving, romantic things to say about a person. Pinterest has lots of extra and creative ways to write and decorate a love letter and envelope, but even a basic one is a lovely gift!

#4: Some Kind of DIY Card

Speaking of Pinterest, social media apps are filled with millions of DIY cards and handmade gift ideas. If you are unsure about gifts from a store, get creative and make your person a handmade card! They may take some effort, but it is very thoughtful and can be a fun way to try something new!

#5: Gift Basket

Gift baskets for holiday presents have surged in popularity over the past few years, and I can’t blame anyone; they’re so cute! I have even participated in the trends myself. If you know this person well, then a good gift for them could be a gift basket full of items related to their favorite things. And, since it is a completely customized basket, it can work for any budget! The items can be store-bought or homemade. The basket can be big or small. Sky’s the limit, and if you have the time and knowledge of this person and their interests, a gift basket is an extremely thoughtful Valentine’s Day present.

#6: Necklace with your initial (Already established relationships only)

Taylor Swift’s lyric “I want to wear his initial on a chain ‘round my neck / Not because he owns me, but because he really knows me” in her song “Call It What You Want” popularized initial necklaces once again for loads of people. Paying attention to someone’s jewelry preferences (like whether they like silver or gold jewelry) can show your thoughtfulness and attention to detail, and a necklace with your initial on it is a cute way for your loved one to show your love to the world.

However, I must preface that this only really works for already established relationships. It can come off as creepy if you tried to give a necklace like this to someone you aren’t dating.

#7: Flowers, Chocolate, and a Stuffed Animal (Because there’s nothing wrong with the basics!)

While the rest of the list focuses on more unique gift ideas, I still want to include that flowers, chocolates and stuffed animals are great Valentine’s Day gifts! They’re cute and sweet, and are classics because of it. Almost anyone will appreciate one or a combination of those three things, so if you aren’t feeling any of the other listed gifts for your valentine or crush, get them flowers, chocolate, and/or a stuffed animal!

Valentine’s Day presents may seem like they can make or break the day, but remember, the most important part about giving a present to someone is that you show you appreciate, care, and think about them. Giving presents is an act of love, and the purpose of the holiday is to show your love to this person. Don’t feel pressured to do something unique just because, instead choose your present(s) meaningfully based on the person you’re giving the gift to and your love for them.
