Seniors accrue tremendous number of absences

As a fellow Senior knowing how important it is to keep our tardies and absences low I don’t understand why kids would not take it more seriously. While not everyone isn’t, there is a vast majority of kids that don’t seem to have a care in the world for not showing up to class on time or even at all. I don’t think that the senior class really understands what lies ahead.

After the bell rings, many students are still outside wandering toward their classes. (Emiliano Martinez)

While now it may not seem like it is that big of a deal, the first semester is already over. Someone I personally know hasn’t gone to the 4th or 5th period since the beginning of December. As seniors, we can only have a max of 10 tardies and absences or we can’t participate in senior events. As well, that means we can’t walk when it comes to graduation time or participate in any school dances like winter formal or Prom. We also will miss out on the end of the year Disneyland trip with our class if they don’t meet the attendance requirements.

It may feel like there is a lot of time left to fix them up with Saturday school but if kids don’t start changing their ways they can’t catch up in time. I also have talked to numerous different teachers and they always say that they have students every year with enough tardies that they cant’ make them up. Even though all year they encourage us to go and get the clearance so they don’t affect us later down the line.

It doesn’t make sense while kids keep skipping class feels like a fun thing to do now they are going to regret it come March time. First semester ends in about a week so the time for all that Saturday school isn’t going to be a great option if those that have a ton don’t take advantage of it now. My recommendation to fellow seniors or even underclassmen is to continue to make sure to keep the amount from getting too high or you might regret it when things become too late.
