Tucker Wetmore’s debut EP Waves on a Sunset is an ambitious blend of modern country influences, classic storytelling, and fresh production that reflects his potential as a breakout star.
Washington-born Tucker Wetmore has become a rapidly rising force in country music, with a string of Billboard hits and impressive streaming numbers in just six months. His debut singles, ‘Wine Into Whiskey’ and ‘Wind Up Missin’ You,’ earned RIAA GOLD certification and charted on the Country Airplay charts, giving Wetmore the perfect momentum for the release of his debut EP.
Waves on a Sunset arrives with high expectations, and it delivers in spades, showcasing Wetmore’s versatility and ability to balance personal reflection with polished, modern production. From the opening track ‘Silverado Blue,’ with its nostalgic, laid-back vibe, to the closing ‘Mister Miss Her,’ a heart-wrenching, acoustic country ballad, Wetmore’s journey through varying emotions and sounds is captivating. The EP ranges from catchy, feel-good love songs like ‘You, Honey’ to darker, introspective moments like ‘What Would You Do?’, where Wetmore’s emotional vulnerability and bold production decisions stand out. The standout track, ‘Break First,’ with its 80s-inspired beats and daring mix of R&B and country, marks Wetmore as a true innovator in the genre.
However, while Wetmore has certainly made his mark with this debut, the EP is a bit too short for my liking. At only eight tracks, it leaves me wanting more, especially considering the emotional depth and production variety on display. It’s a strong start, but I would’ve loved to hear more from Wetmore to fully grasp his range and musical identity.
My Rating: 8.5/10
Overall, I’m rating the EP an 8.5 out of 10. The music is undeniably strong, with Wetmore’s standout songwriting and distinctive voice shining through every track. That being said, the brevity of the EP is its only real downfall. It left me wanting more — not just in terms of track quantity, but also exploring further the musical ideas Wetmore introduces here. The mix of modern sounds with traditional country elements is impressive, but I’d like to see him expand even more on these themes. Still, Waves on a Sunset marks the arrival of a new voice in country music, and I look forward to watching Wetmore continue to grow and evolve in the years to come.
