Helldivers 2 is a Co-op Masterpiece

Helldivers 2 is one of the rare occasions when a live service multiplayer game actually takes off. In comparison to other live service games, Helldivers actually listens to the community and pumps out tons of content. Within the first month alone, this game has had a couple updates, and reached up to around 450,000 players.

Like most other live service games Helldivers 2 does also have a battle pass system, but it’s done better than most games. In this game they are called war bonds and you can actually obtain a paid warbond for free, but you would have to play the game a lot. The game also comes with a free war bond that actually comes with good stuff, that all really changes your gameplay.

You can do all sorts of missions with friends or can even join servers with randoms online. There are defense missions, escort missions, and base missions. With friends this game is incredibly fun, and you all share the same pressure of completing missions before running out of time or getting taken out. Owen and I have tried out multiple types of missions with a group of friends, and we have had a blast with all of them. Friendly fire is also a feature in the game, which leads to comedic moments and taking out your teammates all the time.

With friends, each mission you take on is extremely fun. It’s hard to get tired of playing and shooting robots with your teammates. You can also strategize different ways of beating the missions and work as a group to get the job done. One of our friends, Hunter Falcon, says “This is genuinely the most fun I’ve had playing a game.” We ended up playing for so long we forgot how much time had gone by.

In each mission you are given the option to go up against bugs or robots. Certain planets have bugs and other ones have robots. When loading up the map with different planets, you can see how much the planet has been taken over, and that percentage will be changed, depending on how well the online players do on their missions. The planets with the robots tend to be harder to take over, because those missions are extremely difficult. When going up against the bugs, they’re usually a lot easier and share weaknesses, but the robots aren’t really weak to anything. We’ve been mainly going up against the robots, and even though the missions are extremely difficult, they are very fun and rewarding.

When doing missions, you have the option to choose between s tratagems, which can drop down different weapons, supplies, or airdrops when putting in a certain input. By leveling up during the game, you are given the freedom to purchase more stratagems that can help you out during missions. Recently the game was updated to add a new stratagem to call down mechs, which are used to completely wipe out armies of enemies. The studio behind Helldivers, Arrowhead Game Studios, plans to add even more weapons, vehicles, and enemies to the game in the future.
