Swan Lake is a Classical ballet written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreographed by Julius (Wentzel) Reisinger. The ballet first premiered on March 4, 1877, at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, almost 150 years ago. Despite its age, it is one of the most frequently performed and adapted ballets in history, the world’s most famous companies performing it almost every year.
This May, San Diego, as well as many other states, will have the opportunity to watch this famous ballet performed by the World Ballet Company. I myself plan to attend the ballet and hope to write a review, so stay tuned for that. The ticket prices are somewhat common for a performance of this caliber of popularity, ranging from $55 to $155 depending on the seat you choose.
I recently went to my first live ballet performance and after years of watching youtube recordings of ballet, watching it live is without a doubt the most fulfilling experience I’ve had in my life. The ballet was The Nutcracker, a ballet also written by Pyoter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. As a fan of Tchaikovsky’s music and ballet in general, seeing the Nutcracker was really exciting. I can only imagine how moved I’ll be when seeing Swan Lake, as it is the more favored of the two by its creator.
The company’s performance will star the accomplished soloist Andrea Lassakova, who will be playing Odette / Odile, first soloist Veronica Ovchinnikova, and principal dancer at LINES Ballet Adji Cissoko and will be showed on May 17 and 18 at the Civic Theatre.
