Lethal Company makes scares funny rather than scary due to it being with friends.
Lethal Company has taken the gaming world by storm, seemingly coming out of nowhere. Being made by only one person, it’s outselling the most recent Call of DUty and is currently the most popular game on Steam.
It’s a horror game designed to be played with four friends, which ends up taking away a lot of the scares. The objective is to go to different moons to get objects so you can reach a quota for the lethal company you work for. Failure to reach said quota leads to you and your friends getting forcefully ejected from your ship.
Horror games usually become less scary when you’re with someone, which is definitely true here. You could be getting chased by some scary monster and get taken out of the moment when you hear your friend say something incredibly dumb. On the other hand, hearing your friend screaming from a distance can raise some concern.
Lethal Company is a roguelike game, meaning once you fail to reach a quote you lose all your progress. This can be really annoying as the game is pretty difficult without the upgrades. As the game uses proximity chat, you can only hear other players when they’re within a set distance of you. Walkie talkies allow you to talk to them no matter the distance, without it communicating is a challenge.
The monsters in the game are all very distinct. From bugs that attack you when you’re carrying items to shadow creatures, there’s no shortage of variety. My favorite of these enemies is the ghost girl. A little girl whom only one player can see at a time. She toys with her victim until she attacks, she then picks another player to go after. Not all enemies are so unique though, there’s some pretty boring ones like the spider and the worm.
To conclude, Lethal Company is a very unique little horror game that feels a little less scary than anticipated when playing with friends. Lots of fun to be had with friends and some very unique enemies all made by one developer.
