Women’s Soccer Spotlight
Soccer is a sport that comes with a captain or captains. Being a captain demonstrates your level of responsibility. To be a captain, you must be a leader who takes leadership, and respects teammates, coaches, and others, a captain represents the team as a whole.
Canyon Hills played Hoover High School Friday, January 27, 2023, and took the win. One of their captains Kalea Lawless number 8 usually plays forward but as a captain stepped up and played center back. Kalea had an amazing game as playing a defensive position was never in her head.
Coach Jane, one of the Varsity Coaches said “She is a versatile player. Plays any position she is needed. She stepped up big time in a different position and also assisted on the game-winning goal”.
Lawless has been playing soccer since the age of seven, she started playing because of the inspiration her older sister had on her. Lawless started playing her first couple of years at rec then went on to play for a club which she still currently does.
Lawless said, “playing center back was a big step up for me because I have never really played that position before so I was very nervous and there were times when I didn’t know what to do so I had to ask my teammates to help/support me to make sure I was in the right position”.
As Canyon Hills got the win with the score being 2-1 Lawless also stated “I was relieved that we finally won against them because we lost the last time we played them. However, we played a lot better in this game and we ended up winning. Kalea is a prime inspirational player because she goes to show how stepping up as a captain really shows inspiration to all other players and teammates.
